Personal Productivity – Coaching or Insanity? Your Choice

March 11, 2014 by Joe McAuliffe

Personal Productivity – Coaching or Insanity? Your Choice.

There are coaches or instructors for virtually every aspect of our lives.  People use coaches for health and fitness, business, spiritual guidance, and to overcome destructive behavior. Coaches have many different names. They are called instructors, professors, sponsors, mentors, priests and trainers.

These people play an important role in other’s lives. They are experts at specialties that we have not yet mastered. They also offer objectivity we are unable of having ourselves because we are so intensely involved, or worse, have bad habits we’re unable to break.

It’s common to use this group when we know very little about a subject matter we are interested in. But do we need coaches when we already know a great deal about an area we want to master?

The answer to this question can be found in the definition of insanity, “To keep doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”. If you’ve worked diligently to achieve a specific goal or result, yet have had no success on your own, then it’s probably time for a coach.

For example, if you’ve tried to lose weight on your own without success, you hire a fitness instructor.  If you’ve attempted to master skills in your real estate career and had little or no success reaching the next level, then it’s time for a coach.

Coaches are usually available in a group or private environments. The difference in cost can be significant. Either way, it makes sense to take advantage of the expertise and guidance a coach can give to get you over the hump and onto the next level of your life.

The Alternative is to wallow in mediocrity, or even worse, be stuck in a highly successful “rut”, never able to achieve the potential you have been blessed with. The real question you should ask yourself to determine if you need a coach is, “Am I reaching my potential?” If the answer is no, it’s time to change your strategy and look to the guidance and support a coach can offer you.
